hey everyone my names matt and i own a 1997 ford ranger 4.0L V6 automatic its a very nice vehical except the motors has a noise coming from the airbox. i know i know ur all thinking im crazy but lisent to my story. yesturday i just got alot of work done to the car it got an oil change, idler pully, belt tentioner, new belt, EGR valve and its piping. ever since i got the car back in august it made a squealing noise ever so often but now thats its cold it seems to get worse i dont know why but after i got the work done to it it seemed like it was fixed but when i pulled into my neiboorhood it made the noise again and it was worse i thought something was gonna break lucky nothing did so i drove it around some more and almost everytime i get to 2000rpms it makes the noise so i pulled it into my driveway and put it into park and the noise went away so i started thinking it was somthing whith the tranny so i took it out again for some more driving and then pulled it back into my driveway , the noise was still thier so i keeped it in drive and had my buddy keep the brake applied wile i look under the hood to see were the noise was coming from i determind that it was coming from the airbox and as soon as i pulled the lever on the airbox to open it and alowed for air to come into it a different way the noise went away emeditly anywon got any ideas on this? ooo and the noise is like a whining noise
Pretty strange problem you've got there. Sounds like something is partly obstructing the airflow in to the air box. I'd look at the intake where it pulls the air into the box to the filter and see if the mechanic dropped a rag or an old part or a tool in that area that's causing the obstruction. Did they change the air filter too? Maybe it's somehow defective and causing a restriction (never heard of that but hey, never heard of a problem like yours either!)
If all else fails, take it back to the shop and have them listen to it while you demonstrate the fact that it goes away when you open the airbox, and point out to them that it never did it till they worked on it.
hey thanks for your info and ill defenitly cheak out the guidlines after this but i did take it apart and found nothing obstructing the air flow. and thes noise has been thier sence i got the car back in august but it only did it maby once for a second or two probably every two weeks now that its winter almost up here in massachussetts its getting colder and the noise is almost all the time now oo and no they did not replace the air filter but just so u know i am a mechanic, sort of, im a senior at a technical high school and i talked to a couple of my teachers and they have not a clue. they think that their probably a crack in a hose that connects to the air tube and when the engine is given power and it produces torque it moves causing the crack to open more alowing more air to get suck in the crack causeing the noise so when i get the chance i will tack a look at those hoses
