I just started driving my '74 Bronco with a reman '69 302, reman motorcraft 2bbl, MSD 6a ignition box and helicore wires, Wild Horses ceramic long tube headers and custom dual exhaust with wanabe flowmasters. It was running rich, (black soot in exhaust and on plugs, sluggish) so i called pony carburetors and got some 46 jets to replace my 48's. Its better but still rich, sooty black smoke when i get on it. Could my PCV could be contributing? I hooked it up different because of my aftermarket valve covers.
I can't see a faulty pcv system causing a rich condition. You mentioned the carb was rebuilt. Is it the same casting/part number as the original, or at least for a 302? If its different, it could be for a larger engine and calibrated differently. Other things that could cause a rich condition are, leaky/saturated float, (which would cause a higher fuel level in the float bowl) improperly adjusted float, debris at the needle and seat, clogged air bleeds in the air horn, choke not opening fully, high fuel pressure, improperly adjusted mixture screws, and jets that are too large.
Thanks for the suggestions. The guy at pony carburetors said it was for a '73 half ton, 302. He said it would work fine. I might call them back and get some smaller jets. I was just curious about the pcv, i kind of custom rigged it. Also what is the best way to check the float level? From the top of the carb to the level of the fuel? I'll have to get the specs from my repair manual.

Rigged it how? It is there to release the pressure from the lower end of the engine . If it isn't hooked up right your engine is going to start spewing oil from various places.
When i redid the engine i set it up differently to clean up some clutter. There is a pcv in the passenger side valve cover with the hose going to the port on the back of the carb base. The driver side valve cover only has a breather type of oil cap. Stock had the passenger side going to the air filter with the driver side having another pcv and hose coming out of the oil cap going to the back of the carb.
