I have been going easy on my automatic transmission, and it has been working fine in the past few weeks. However, I have been considering replacing the automatic with a manual. I know this would be one helluva project, but just how hard would it be?
Its really not so bad a job, I have done it in other vehicles. Its very labor intensive so dont expect to do it in a day. If your fairly competent in the mechanical department and have the facilities, go for it. You will of course be changing out a lot of stuff, driveshaft, trans brace, pedal assemblies, wiring connectors, flex plate, bearing, shifter.
What would make it easier would be to have a wrecked parts truck, park them side by side, and just start swapping over. You'll want the steering colum as well and get rid of that auto shifter. If I had the parts available, I'ld do it, I hate automatics anyway, it wouldn't take much to convince me. Make sure if you get a parts truck, that the t-bars have been cranked, it will make the job easier ha ha ha !!!
You will also have to get into the electronics, like changing out the PCM, sensors, etc. .....I agree with PW01, trade your truck for one with a stick.
If you do put in a manual trans find a better one than the ranger offers. Put a good clutch kit in there too. I hope you realize your towing rating will drop big time, and you are moving away from a nice easy ride.
The tow rating drops because of warenty issue's, not because it won't pull it. I've had 4 M5OD's without any problems. Just keep shift rail plugs and fluid in them, they'll be fine. I sorta beat the crap out of mine and they ask for more. Some people can have trouble with a ball of cotton, but for the most part, thier a pretty good tranny. 'Sure", I'ld like to have an old indestructable cast iron 4-speed from the 70's, but you know that isn't happening.
I was just kinda batting the idea around. It seems that it's a project too big for me. And speaking of 5 speeds, wendell, your sig says you have a 5 seed transmission.
Yes I do, I've only owned a couple of automatics in my life, I don't care for them. My ranger and focus st both have 5-speed manuals, the wifes libby is an auto, I tried to talk her in to a 6 -speed manual in the jeep, she can drive one, she's just to lazy to shift ha ha.
