I was running low on gas so I swung by a cheveron and filled up on regular 87 octane gas. Before I pumped the gas, I added a fuel additive that was supposed to clean deposits on valves, injectors.. etc. After that, I drove it home and did an oil change, using Motocraft 5W-30, manufactures spec. with a basic FRAM oil filter
Now I have a knock at idle.
Is 5W-30 Oil to thin for an engine that has 86K on it? Should I drain it and add 10W-30 or something thicker?
The Knock is prrrrrety ugly sounding.
86K is not much milage. What engine do you have. I have read about the 4.0 SOHC having a knocking issue with the timing chain cassettes around your year model. You might try searching for the SOHC and timing if the search feature is working. Seems like I remember reading about a recall on some models.
Yeah, I know it's what worries me. I actually have the OHV which from what I have read are the better choice out of the two. The noise sounds deep, hear it best with ear in the driver-side wheel-well. Tommrow im going to try to run some 10w-30 and use a different filter, Mobil-1 instead of Fram; seems like there isn't a whole lot of fram fans out there.
I flushed out what was inside of pan (5W-30) and replaced it with Mobil 1 10w-40 also replaced the FRAM with a Mobil 1 filter. It minimized the sound, but it is undeniable - it's still there.
Sounds like it 'wants-to-be-a-diesil'
Pull the cap running? or after and look inside? what do you mean by pulling the cap?
Are you hearing something like a rod knock or a spark knock? I was assuming you were hearing it at idle and it was like a rod know from your earlier posts.
Well, I honestly can't feel confident saying I can determine a spark knock from a rod knock, but yes, at idle is the only time I can hear it, weither it be the normal engine sound and road noise muffling it? Im not sure.
Is there a way to deterimine? I had bought a new set of plugs; havn't had the pleasure of starting that adventure yet.
If it's at idle, it's not likely to be spark knock. You'll usually note spark knock when the motor is under a load. Timing would cause spark knock, but the 4.0L is distributerless and the timing is all electronic. It is a ticking noise or a knocking noise? Ticking is not that uncommon.
I'd call it more of a knock, I understand that it's tough and frustrating to diagnose over the internet, but I'm really not sure. It sounds like a diesil, that rattling knock-y sound. I have that Lucus stuff, supposed to reduce friction and other magical goodies that regular Oil can't. Torn trying it, or something else. But I really want to get it figured.
If it is a knock; I hope it's not knocking on heavens door. haha.
Says I can't send you a message, you requested no emails.
It's ok, the sound quality is terrible, it was taken via cell phone.
Any other thoughts? Lucus oil stabilizer? --anything?
I'm not a big fan of Lucas. If it's not making the noise at higher RPM's or under load, I don't know that I would be overly concerned. Wonder if you could post it up like a picture in your gallery?
Doesn't look like that is going to be an option.
It sounds just so terrible when its idling tho. It idles hot around 900 too.
after I pulled the IAC it sounded like marbles where dropped down in the block
