My LS works very well on ice and snow. Both wheels spin consistantly. Enough that the truck will get sideways in a hurry if I'm not careful.
How many miles on your truck?
Are you sure it's and LS diff and not open?
You can trick an open diff into acting like an LS with some brake pressure.
Now just to clarify things a locker has both wheel spinning at the same speed anytime the truck is under power. When you turn corners with a locker it is possible to modulate the amount of lockup with careful throttle.
I have an ARB in the front of my FJ40 and a mechanical locker out back.
I would totally recommend an ARB out back for any daily driver.
I,ve got the limitted slip on my 2005. It sucks. I had a 97 and 2000 and both of them worked great. I took it in to the dealer and they said it was working as designed wich to me was no better than an open diff. I drained the fluid and refilled with synthetic lubed and left out the additive. I didn't have any chatter and it works alot better. Not as good as the older units but I think that's as good as it's going to get.
Ok, well it seems the consensus is that the LSD sucks. My question is, how different can the open diff be if this is how bad the LS is?
For me, any time it rains it can be a nightmare pulling out into traffic.
How do you know if you have a LS by looking at the tag on the rear diff? I looked this past weekend, and it seems like some of the letters/numbers are smashed under one of the diff bolts, but if I remember correctly, I believe the parts that I could read said something like "L73" or "73L", and I am supposed to have a 3.73 LS on my 2007. Do any of those codes ring a bell? Thanks!
the rear axle code should be on the vehicle certification label. door jam
it will list "axle"
The newer 2005-2006 use these codes:
37- 3.73
3L- 3.73 LS
41- 4.10
4N- 4.10 LS
43- 4.30
4L- 4.30 LS
48- 4.88
8L- 4.88 LS
53- 5.38
5L- 5.38 LS

DSMMH did changing the fliud help make the thing work like it should?
MAD......I have not driven it enough to really give you a good answer. I do know when I pull out in traffic and try to accelerate it still gets sideways on wet roads and if I get on it on my gravel road I always get 2 ruts. I have 42,000 miles on my X and the rear diff oil was pretty nasty looking. The front diff was clear.
