I will be driving to Virginia from Delaware to assist my son in replacing the gasket between the two manifolds on his 81 F150 300 Six. Are there any tips to removing the bolts holding the pieces together. I fear 25 year old bolts may be a bit tough. I have a little propane torch kit, is this going to be any help, or is this not enough? Any help will be appreciated......Thanks
The night before spray them down with penetrating oil, BUT make sure the engine is cool!!! I have learned that letting old bolts soak for a while really helps a lot. Hope you dont break any, good luck.
If they're bolts, be prepared for them to snap pretty much no matter what. I've only ever been able to get one set out intact and it involved getting the exhaust manifold glowing cherry red with an acetylyne torch. I always reassemble my manifolds with studs to make it easier the next time.
Also, some of the intakes are studded from the factory, and those are the nice ones to work with. My 85 has it. Just heat the nuts up and spin 'em off.
The bolts should be 3/8-16. Last time i replaced a set I used 7/16 fine thread step studs. they're 7/16 where they go into the manifold but are 3/8 up top.
I'd find the studs first, then figure out what tap to use (Sometimes it can be hard to find studs that long)
Be sure and work them really slow if you do get them started. If there isn't a puddle of penetrating oil underneath the manifold after you get the first bolt out you may not be using enough. I found that it helped to kind of work them back in a little after I got them to come out some. Don't go too fast either way or you'll break one off (bolt number two) You should have the method perfected by bolt number three. Good luck.
I Thank all who contributed to my post, and problem. I lucked out, and every bolt that I touched came out, "easily ". I was prepared with taps, and studs. I found mt leak, and two more, now all fixed. I guess as they say, "Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while". Thanks again, and Happy Holidays to all..........
