clutch adjustment

High I have a 1989 f 250 and when i bought it it had an almost brand new clutch. Im new to driving a manual and i dont have any prior knowledge/skill of driving a stick. when i let the clutch out in any gear even reverse it seems to engage nice and smoothly then within the last 1-2 inches it suddenly engages the rest of the way. So what im asking is first is it just me although im letting it out very slowly while applying gas and second if its not me is there some type of adjustment for this?

P.S. its got a ZF 5-Speed

Thanks Jason

Unfortunately, there is probably no adjustment to the clutch in this particular instance. The clutch is hydraulic in this truck, and would suspect that is has something to do with the amount of throttle you are applying when you do this, as the pressure plate isnt putting all its clamping force on the disc and the disc is slipping slightly until the pressure plate makes it grab hard and the truck matches speed with the motor. Try letting the clutch out until you feel it start to pull ever so slightly, without letting the motor stall and not using throttle, then add some throttle gently and let the clutch out slowly the rest of the way. It takes some time to get really smooth with a manual tranny, and the big gear box of the ZF doesnt help any, plus dont start in 1st since it is super low and meant for heavy hauling and heavy towing when you need that extra grunt to get moving. Starting in second will be alot smoother because of the higher gear ratio, so jumpy acceleration will be less.

ok thanks ive only been driving one for about 2 hours total drive time so ive got some room for improvement. I have though been starting out in second because if i didn't id have to shift out of first at like 6-10 mph.

Thanks, Jason

It is refreshing to read this post as I myself have a 95 F250 with 5spd and I am new as well. I dont know what model transmission I have but I do know that if I start in 1st gear it goes to about 5mph and must be shifted into 2nd gear right away. So, I too start in 2nd all the time and it took some getting used to as shifting through the gears is no problem but the intial start from a dead stop still messes me up a little bit but nothing like when I first started (approx 2 months ago) it is rough learning manual on these trucks but I am sure when I get into a smaller car with stick I should be a pro. It is all about finding the sweet spot on the clutch right where it slips enough to get it moving without any bucking or stalling. Once you find that you will be golden.

Good luck!!!
