56 Tilt Hood lifting
I've got a 56 F100 with a one piece fender/hood setup that raises from the rear. A doghouse was the term one person used. It is kind of cool but a big pain when it comes to raising it. Not that is too heavy for one person to lift, but it definately puts undue torque/stress on the system if it isn't lifted from both sides.
So the question is: Has anyone used shocks similar to what would be found on a SUV rear door to aide in lifting a setup like this. It should would be nice not to call my wife out of the house every time I wanted to lift the hood.
Thanks,
Rick
Look in the area of your spring tower (or forward) and push in the area of the middle of the wheelwell. The length of the piston will depend entirely on the shape of your clip and where exactly you want to mount it. Most surplus stores have a good selection of struts for various applications.
For something different, look at an air piston (air shocks kit?) with a small compressor on a switch. If the mounts are aligned with weight on the piston at the "full open" position, the hood should close by releasing the pressure from the lines. For about $100 you could have a push-button hood.
Good luck!!
