They don't need to be cleaned. That is just a name that myself and few other engine builders I know call them. We have names for other parts as well. Around the shop a "bumpstick" is a camshaft. I know an old timer that calls oil pumps "lard pumps". I have heard some funny descriptions of problems engines can have over the years. I have naturally picked them up too.
