Installed a coolant filter this weekend because I was seeing some particles in my coolant. I used guzzles pics and it turned out great. No leaks, I'm really happy with it. Here's my list and cost
NAPA 4019 filter base $41
NAPA 4070 Filter $12
2- 3/8 Male barbs $4
1- 3/8 Elbow $2.5
1- 3/8 Flare Tee $3.5
4- 3/8 barbs to fit Tee and Elbow $8.95
Clamps $6
3/8 hose $8.7
Wire Loom Covering $6
Total $92.65
ITP Diesel total kit, everything included $79
So when will I learn???????? Should'a just supported a sponsor. Of course I didn't even include the time in fabricating a bracket. That was like a 4 beer job. Oh well, I got it done. Lesson learned again. I did the same thing when I Hutched and Harpooned. I spent more money doing myself than I would have if I just bought Dennis' kit.
Your fabrication comes with bragging rites you just can't buy. Now you can show your friends and they can go OOOoOOoo and that'll be worth the extra $20.
Not all of us have the inherent mechanical ingenuity to build and fabricate our own brackets, you know.
I did a similar thing when I built my externally regulated fuel system. I was trying to save some money by building it myself, but I think I ended up at about the same as the ITP kit. Oh well, I've got the satisfaction of doing it myself and I think my kit is a little better.
The filter I put together would have also come in for more than Bob's kit if the CarQuest counter guy had not looked at the wrong price and gave me fleet pricing for the parts. I would build it all myself again even it the parts cost more than the kit just for the satisfaction of doing it from scratch.
(Don't get me wrong, I've spent plenty with Dieselsite and Bob has some great merchandise)
Ok, I've got a smile now. Thanks for all the support. I love the neighborhood I live in. We built a workshop for one of the guys last summer. 26' X 40', he is a blacksmith and welder by hobby, a boiler inspector by trade and one of the most generous guys you have ever met. Any kind of project any of the guys in the neighborhood have is usually done over there with plenty of help and plenty of beer (sometimes a little too much of both). He has ample supplies of metal stock and for this bracket he just broke out the plasma cutter and cut me a nice piece of 1/8 galvanized. Its awesome to have the right tools. Power tools and beer, gotta love it.
