Angry Starter woes

Ok, here's the deal...86 Ranger,2.9L V6, 4X4...3 starters in 3 weeks.(2nd one was bad to start with). I put the last one in yesterday and when I started it I hear the most god-awful grinding sound while the bendix engages. The guy at the auto parts store suggested a screwed up flywheel, but this dosen't really sound like what I think I'm hearing. Another associate heard what we were discussing and said he had heard of cases whereas the bendix put on the remanufactured starters doesn't match the flywheel gear. Has anyone heard of this? I am a carpenter and not a hardcore motorhead so if anyone could suggest a fix or have any suggestions I would appreciate it VERY much. TIA

Do you still have either of the previous two starters so that you can compare them side by side? You could count the teeth on the starter gear to see if they have the same number, and while you're at it you can take a look at the flywheel teeth by turning the engine over by hand while inspecting them throgh the starter hole.

I haven't really heard of a rebuilder installing the wrong Bendix drive, but anything is possible.
There are also shims available to mount between the starter and the bellhousing, installing one of these if nothing alse appears wrong might clear up the problem.
