Hey there, I was wondering what I can do to help my '03 F350 start when it's cold out. I can plug it in at the house but am unable to at work. I know to let the glow plugs work for a little longer but the other night when I went to start it it took nearly 10 min to get her going. It was 15 degrees out and I thought I was going to have to buy a new starter after the whole ordeal. My batteries are great and it has no problem cranking, just didn't want to start. This is my first 6.0l and I don't know if there are any tricks out there. Any advise is appreciated. Thanks
you using any fuel additives that might help with those temps? If it's cold a long time it might matter. I use the Diesel Kleen white bottle because I can see those temps every night.
The new flash (06E17 I believe) helps with that. It cycles the injectors to purge the oil from them. This allows them to start easier in the cold weather.
the new flash is not 06e17. it is tsb 6-22-03 which can make a major differerence. but you may be having other issues. if it is that cold you might wantto try a lighter oil.
You might want to get it looked at. My 04/03 fires right over unplugged with no additives down to 5 degrees. I dont like to leave it unplugged all nite but I sometimes forget. You would think I would remember after having to wait so long for heat on the ride into work. John
Must be something else as already stated. My 2005 will start first time every time to minus 25F. Shivers a bit for a minute. Try an additive first but look for something else.(frozen lower fuel filter) not letting enough fuel in. Just a guess
Good suggestions on a fuel additive if you're not using it. Are your fuel filters relatively new? If you can, a 10W-30 or 5W-40 synthetic oil will help a little as well.
