Ok here is my problem, after I have been on the highway for about 20 miles the downpipe starts rubbing on firewall when I turn right or hit the brakes, it makes a hell of a noise sounds like a horrible grinding sound, I thought leafs were tired but that is not the case. Is this pipe able to be turned in the turbo so it sits further away or am I just screwed. It never did this until the mechanic replaced O-Rings on the pedestal. Could he have not tightened the down pipe the right way. This guy was a beauty he forgot to tighten all kinds of things. I sure would appreciate any advice or solutions to my problem.
Boa 1277 When I installed my downpipe I hadn't made enough room ! Bending the flange on the firewall and I fought it by trying to loosen the down pipe and rotating it that would work for a little bit then it would come back. Finaly I just had to get down there and bend the flange back and make the room. Not sure thats your problem but sound just like what I was screwing with ... Good Luck
Since you are suspicious of you mechanic, first thing I would check is to see if it is on right.
If it wasn't making the noise before and nothing else was changed, that's probably the problem.
Yeah I am really suspicious of the mechanic, he was just a kid who had just graduated from tech school, of course all this came out after I found missing turbo bolts and the radiator hose clamps not tightened. Could you tell me what to look for as to how the down pipe should be in there. How far away should it be from the fire wall when in correctly. Thanks for all of the suggestions, this place really has come thru for me recently.
Same thing happened to my youngest son. He bought an "upgrade" version from a supposed notable dealer of such as that. It was a crappy install at best. I had to remove the downpipe, cut out 1/4" about an 1 1/2" back from the flange and reweld it. After that all was fine.
But if this was done by someone else, at a "respectable" shop - make them redo it on their nickel. JMHO.
The sad part is my work did it. We have a full shop that repairs various fire trucks, ambulances etc etc. The nice part about having the shop do it is I can pay it off on time by taking money out of my check, I also get cost on parts and discounted labor. We have a couple of guys with over 20yrs experience out there and 1 new kid, lucky me. They have already fixed everything else the kid screwed up on, I am just sick of going out there and bugging them, I want to fix it my self that way I do not have to rely on anyone else. So it just goes to show you, "You Get What You Pay For"
one of my buddies had the same problem. im pretty sure he took the downpipe off and then just took a hammer to the firewall. it doesnt rub anymore as far as i know
Great news, I finally got under the truck to try and adjust downpipe from hitting the firewall, I loosened the bolt holding downpipe to turbo, I took a piece of wood and tried to wedge between firewall and downpipe which kinda of worked but not well enough, so I got under truck and tried leveraging downpipe to get a little more space between pipe and firewall, and lo and behold wedged inbetween downpipe and firewall was the bolt that had worked its way out of turbo pedestal that the kid forgot to tighten all the way. I removed bolt retightened everything and truck is back to normal no rubbing at all!!! This must be my lucky day, I just love it when it is something simple....
