I have been having a little slippage and hard shifting in my 1992 3.0. Does any one have experience using this stuff? What are the signs of a clogged trans filter or failing shift modulator?
Trust me on this, the best you can do as far as fluids go, is to drain the old fluid, remove the old filter, and do a gentle flush with at least 10 quarts of fluid. For your ear make sure you use the proper type ATF fluid. If your tranny is acting up, you need to service it, and no additive is going to turn your old worn out burned up fluid into super-lubricant. As far as future prevention is concerned, synthetics last longer, and can withstand more heat without breakdown. Both the symptoms you list above can be signed of a failed or sticky modulator. I would replace the modulator as part of a full service which you will need. You seem to have been doing some of your homework on transmission troubles. Do a search for how to actually do the modulator replacement. If there are more serious problems inside the transmission, there are kits and upgrade parts available that make these transmissions nearly bulletproof.
roree,
i second khanty....no conditioners except on the wife's hair....
don't work in trannys
if you need help with full description of steps, please ask?
believe the search function is still down...new server is still in Timbuctu being setup or torn down?
use a screen type tranny filter....no pad type....they plug up...
put in an inline filter and change every 20k....Magnefine or similar....low cost tranny protection....use a top line ATF such as Chevron Supreme DextronIIIh/Mercon....
These guys have given you excellent Advice. . . . .
Snake oil & Miracle Cures are not mechanics in a can. In the fine print is there any mention of a guarentee or warranty in case of problems caused after dumping the secret formulas into the vehicle components? I doubt it.
The OEM says what's req'd to keep your vehicle running in Owners & Service manuals. By following those directions & instructions I am approaching 1/4 Million Miles on same engine, tranny, and rears. My transfer case was warranteed in a NSR/ National Safety Recall campaign back in 98/99, that was a recall not a failure. As a Ex-FoMoCo service person, Don't putz with qwik fix snake oil, Miracle Cure chemicals, do it correctly or leave it alone. Otherwise you may end up replacing what needed a good service or a simple repair.
Very sensible replies. The truth is, at 190k miles I am a little apprehensive in disturbing the sleeping dog too much, if you know what I mean. However, I will take your advice and change the filter and fluid. Thanks.
Roree,
I agree woth 96_4wdr, Changing critical fluids is like breathing fresh clean air, or having a refreshing bath etc. etc.
It's "bootleg" chemicals which give systems the enemas and purgings that ruin them. A lot of them actually attack seal & O-Ring material causing it to swell, in the pretense of "tightening them up". Sort of like telling a guy with a hernia, keep lifting that weight and you may heal that thing eventually. . . . . Not gonna happen, is it . . . . ?
I service my ATF about every 24k Miles or 24 months on GP. Got 12 services in it already, but it still runs great as ever. . .
Leaving transmission fluid in an tranny for 120,000 miles is about like leaving regular oil in your crankcase for 25,000 miles. Its just worn out by the time its gets there.
