mixed up rings

Happy Holidays everyone. I was inspecting my rings prior to putting them on new pistons and now I dont remember which group of compression rings is top and which is the 2nd. Both groups are the same size and the only identifing mark is a dot on both groups. One group is more blackish and one is more grey. That is the only difference. Thanks.

If you got a moly ring set, the "brighter" looking one goes on the top ring. Other wise you can't go buy if it has an inside bevel for the location of the ring, because different ring manufacturers sometimes have bevels on one ring, both rings, or neither. Best bet is to get a hold of the manufacture to be sure.

A Moly faced ring will have a visible moly groove on the face of the ring. That ring goes on top. If neither ring has the moly groove, you can install either in either groove. And as the others have posted, if there's a beveled inside edge or dot, that side goes up.
