Would it be possible to play a 6 volt radio in a 12 volt truck? If so what what would the part be called and where could I get one. Also can you test a 6 volt radio without a 6 volt battery? I don't have a meter but I can borrow one if needed. TIA
I think that some auto stores sell Drop resistors to let you use your 6 volt radio with 12 volts systems.
Radio Shack sells transformers that drop 12 volts to 6 for instruments and radios

The 6V radio is a tube and vibrator unit and it draws quite a bit of current. RatShack dropping resistors are way undersized for this. There are some companies selling regulator units that provide a stable 6.8-7VDC, they work good.
A transformer is an AC device and will go up in smoke real fast if you try it on DC!
A fully charged battery is 6.3V and will power a radio for testing purposes.
If you need radio service drop me an E-Mail; thats a sideline Ive been doing over 40 years.
If this is an original ford 6 volt radio, I would assume it's probably positive ground, which is going to throw another monkey wrench into your plans. You may be able to rig it if you could isolate the metal chassis of the radio. Although I think I saw JCWhitney sold a gizmo which changed the voltage to 6v and isolated the power too, so you could run the positive 6v ground for the radio. Nothing is simple is it?
That drops all sorts of monkey wrenches into this. I have two original 59 radios and three 55 radios and I believe a 55 round dash clock which is seperate from the radio. It is also 6 volt. I was wanting to mount these in ny panel truck. 286merc where are you located at? I'm in W/Ky. Guys thanks for the quick reply. I appreciate it very much.

Yeah but if you connect a 6 volt radio to a 12 volt system wont the music play twice as fast??
