Shavings follow gravity, most of them fall in your face, just go slow and there wont be a problem. There is plenty of room for a drill, I used a clamp on model so I didn't have to worry with a tap.

I drilled and tapped and was worried about the shavings also. after i drilled the hole i stuck a magnet in the hole to get most of the shavings out and i also put a shop vac up to it with my hand cuped around the hole. No problems. Plenty of room to do so don't let it scare you, just take your time and follow the instructions and you will be fine.
