will a t5 take the place of the m50d.what bellhousing bolt up in place of the m50d on my 2.3 engine .i know i need a different drive shaft maybe explorer .
i opologyze for asking questions that probably have already been answered.
have a nice day
3.45 rear axle.dont need speed just a better trans.
You're going to need the 2.3L - T5 bellhousing from a Mustang.
As far as I know, the driveshaft will need to be a custom job. The Exploder one will not work.
Everything else will fit fairly well without much modification. Depending on the year of your Ranger, you may need to find a new way to hook the speedometer up, as I do not believe the T-5s have a provision for a speedo gear and cable.
And finally, you will need to cut a new hole for the shifter, as the old shifter hole doesn't align properly with the T-5.
Though I'll be the first one to tell you the M5OD is a good transmission, it's not designed for the track or lots of towing, but it's reliable and can handle decent power output.
The thunderbird turbo coupes from 84 to 88 used the t-5 4 cylinder combonation, also mid 80's mustang svo's and mercury merkur's. Just take your drive saft to a machine shop and have shortened or lengthened, whatever it needs.
You want the transmission from a 87-93 Mustang 4 cylinder. These T5s have a 3.97:1 1st gear that is pretty close to the same 1st gear found in the M5OD. An SVO T5 with the 3.5:1 1st would be nice for a truck with a little more power or gear in the rear, but I don't think you're going to find many people in possession of such a transmission, such as myself, willing to sell it off.
it appears that i either use my 71 cs in place of my 96 splash but that requires changing it to 4wd .or just replace the m50ds as they break .replaceing the m50ds seems easier but i dont know how much a used m50d costs to replace .
thanks for all the info
have a good day
i cross 3 washes every day to get too and from my house.
my splash is light enough but my 71cs is too heavy
It has its quirks, but I haven't heard of a rash of failures. Usually the only real problem with them is if the plugs on the shift rails go and leaks enough fluid out that the bearings are starved of lubrication.
"Yeah", I got a couple of buddies running 5.0's with the M5OD, and they haven't exploded yet. I've had 4 of them and beat the tare out of them without a hitch, but as stated, you got to keep them lubed.
i havent broke one yet .but i put a lot of stress on my ranger splash .i have a extra engine .now i need to get a extra m50d just in case .my 71 cs wont go across the desert like the splash.too heavy .rides really rough as it should.its the last of the heavy duty old trucks.
I wouldn't worry about it too much. It's a pretty durable transmission, though it's not good for towing. It will take most anything you'll ever throw at it with a Ranger.
3.45 - 3.73 won't be a huge difference....you'll notice a little more off the line perhaps, higher RPMs in cruise...and lower max shift speeds...it's not going to be a huge gain though, if that's what your thinking. To really notice it you're going to need 4.10s...which wouldn't be bad with the M5OD and 2.3L, as the 2.3L has a pretty high powerband.
