Well I just totaled my 01 f-150 5.4 4x4 supercrew.I am wanting to get a diesel in a used f-250 or f-350 4x4 crew cab.I want to be able to pull a slide-in truck camper.I know eithier will do it.I will be getting something around 100,000 miles.Something around a 01 or 02 maybe before if it has low miles. Are the 7.3's after 2000 turbo? I just need some help on picking out a reliable model that will last a while.I also wan't a 8ft bed.
Thanks
Any of the "new" body-style diesel Super Duty trucks from 1998 on are turbocharged. If you're going to haul a camper, I'd recommend getting the F350 for the extra weight capacity on the sticker. In addition, you need to find a truck that has the camper package already install and likely add airbags to it, or plan to add the heavy sway bar/overload springs/airbags/etc. to a non-camper-package truck.
In my research the '02 7.3 models seem to be going for around $18-26k around here with the oddball truck going down to around $14-15k (I'd avoid that one if it were me).
There are a bunch of them in my area at least, and some are in really good condition too.
If you have around $20k to spend I'm sure you can get a good one.
Check www.traderonline.com for more trucks than you care to look at in your area.
I'd definitely go with a F350 and get the 7.3 in the later years as they had a little more output to them. The 7.3 is a stout motor that will give many years of trouble free driving while returning respectable gas mileage (unloaded of course )
Thanks for all the the help guys.I am looking to spend around 20,000.Looks like I will be leaning toward a 350 non dually.I like a dually but I just don't think I need it.
Depending on how heavy your camper is and how often you'll be hauling it you may want to consider the dually. They really make a difference for towing and hauling heavy loads. Of course a properly fitter SRW will do the job too.
I've owned a few SD trucks and if I was in the market for a used one right now,
I'd get a 2002 or early 2003 model with the 7.3. I found that the seats in the
2002 to be MUCH more comfortable than the 2001 & earlier... I think the 2002's also had a little more HP & torque than the earlier models.
The 7.3 is a great motor. Good luck in your search!
All power strokes from 1994-present are all turbocharged. Some of the International IDI 7.3 were turbo charged from the factory with ATS turbo kits. The late 1999-2003 7.3's are preferred by alot of people.
The seats in the 99-00 are different than the 01-04 models if that matters to anyone lol. Also keep in mind, if you plan on modding the truck for more power; the earlier 7.3s had factory forged rods and the later (mostly late 01 and on) have powdered metal rods.
The difference in HP of the later models and the late 99+ are only in computer tuning (Can be made up with a chip...like say DP-Tuner ). The early 99 Superduties had a slightly different turbo/intake setup than the late 99+.
If you care about the factory ratings, Ford bump the ratings in 2001 (250/505 Auto & 275/520 Manual) and again in 2002 (275/525 Auto).
