I have a 1999 Explorer 4.0L SOHC with 99,000 miles. My CEL light has come on twice this winter. Both times it happened when the temp was below 25 degrees during the start. Both times I reset the light via battery disconnect and drove for a month before it happened again today. Is this something that needs to be serviced or can I just keep resetting the light when it illuminates?
If the light is illuminating there is a problem. Get the computer codes scanned and let us know what codes are stored (most parts stores will pull codes for free, just don't let them sell you anything without a consult first).
When you reset the light you're clearing the codes, but also making it take up to another month before you can even begin to diagnose the problem. You need to at least get an idea of what it is before it leaves you stranded on the side of the road.
