Question Gauge Issue (I think)

Ive got an 1984 F150 with a 351w and its doing some weird things. The other day I drove out to a junkyard to get some parts and I noticed the tach jumping around wildly. Then about 20min later the temp gauge started climbing when I would accelerate and drop back down as soon as I let off the gas. The truck is running fine otherwise. Also if I turn on the signal lights or turn up the heater fan the tach would jump. Strangly not when I turn on the stereo. The truck has a Holley 650 carb (electic choke) an aggressive Crane Cam and an Alpine stereo (Alpine Deck 2x6in in doors, 1x250w 2 channal amp, 1x350w mono amp and a rockford 10in sub) Any Ideas as to what could be causing this?
Thanx

Yeah check your grounds. My truck was doing the same sort of thing. I have an 85 with a 351W same carb bigger cam and a stereo system like yours. Mine was a problem with the ground from the battery. I had to replace the ground wire and then I was good to go.

The battery cables are only a year old and its gounded to the engine block by a header bolt. Is that the correct way? also I was told it might be a voltage regulator.

Remove the cluster and clean everything up. Including the cluster ground cable and the ICVR that control the gauges .
These ICVR's apparently ground out within themselves and cause problems

Chances are good that the engine ground to the cab is bad. You will find it right beside where the accellerator cable comes thru the firewall. It corrodes. Check both ends of the cable. My truck had lots of gauge issues when I got it. Cleaning these connections cured all the problems, and I didnt have to pull the cluster.

Remove ground cable from the exhaust manifold and bolt it to some spot on the engine block, after making sure the cable and the attachment point is clean of paint, grease and other dirt and debris.

Never seen a ground connected to an exhaust manifold. The one on my truck is connected to a bolt on the V8 INTAKE manifold.
