I am thinking of buying a set of the AFR 165. Is their any performance difference between the 165's with the pedestal mont rockers that are emision legal and the 165's with the stud mount rockers that arent emission legal. I like the Pedestal mount because they would be easier to install. Any input?
I wanna keep the stock pistons with the 185's I would need aftermaket pistons or notch the stock ones. And the 165's should make more power, better low end on my mild build. I am useing a 470cfm carb, Performer intake, and comp cams xtreme energy 250h or possibly the 256h. the engine will be 9.0:1 comp
The difference between the emissions legal and not legal is the presence or lack of the exhaust cross over passage. The Stud mount heads if not legal will not have the passage. Seems to me they ought to offer them both ways. Pedestal or stud with and without the passage. Studs would allow bigger cam grinds, but if you're looking for something in between for a mild build, the pedestals will be fine. I've run them with Cobra 1.7 rockers and a B303 cam (.510 lift--224* duration @ .050)
I'm sure a lot of guys will argue the opposite, but with those small cams, I don't think you need aftermarket heads. They are designed for maximum torque with the lower flow stock heads. You could grind on your factory heads and install the bigger 1.9/1.6 valves and get about the same amount of benefit as the AFR 165, I would think. Of course, nowadays those AFR's probably are not much (if any) more expensive than having yours rebuilt. Unless your heads are OK as is and don't need much more than new valve seals and springs. With the 252H I would stick with the stockers, but I;m different than most folks on this board.
