This is just another one of my ridiculous idears but it sounds like it could be a cool one?
I have a 302 sitting in my garage right now and I have a wood burning stove. The stove takes a hour and a half at least before it really starts to put out any warmth. Ny truck heater gets pushing good warm air in around 20 mins. Here is where the hair brained part comes in. Why don't I remove the wood stove, and install the engine in the back corner of my shop with a nice radiator? Would a V-8 at idle be able to maintain a hot temperature in the radiator if i added an electrical fan? I could use a heater core but I think that I will need the full sized rad to make the heat output worth the effort.
If it is cool to make a couch out of the back half of a 50's chev, then it stands to reason that a rumbling chrome plated V-8 (with headers) would make a bitching heater out in my shop.
I don't normally lurk in this forum, but the title of your thread pulled me in.
Please, for the sake of everyone on this board, do this project!!! I want to see pictures and some kind of fuel cost vs BTU comparo of the two systems.
This is just wierd, and indicates that you may have too much free time on your hands...
But hey, go for it and let us know how it works! And please, make sure the exhaust is well-ventilated to the outside.
And don't forget, you'll also get quite a bit of radiant heat off the exhaust, especially if you use headers. You could set a fan up near them to blow the heat around the shop.

Technically you would not even need to have the engine in the shop, make a room outside and just put the radiators inside. Be sure to have the full array of gauges, and the ignition inside. I really like the idea of hooking a gen to the flywheel to power the neighborhood.
My guess would be that you won't be able to keep the engine warm without a small radiator. On a cold day you can probably run most 302's at 1500 RPM without a fan at all. Add a fan and it will cool the engine off in no time.
I hope it's tied down well if you have to get up to 4000 rpm just to heat the radiator up :-)
I agree with those above, if you are using the gas anyway, hook a generator up and plug in some electric heaters.
