Should i buy?

I have the opportunity to buy a 2002 f250 for 24k. it has been chipped and has 100k miles. My questions are is this a good deal for a crew cab 4x4? is it worth buying a truck that has been chipped? And how expensive are diesel repairs? Thanks

diesel repairs are pretty expensive but luckily you found this site. The amount of money I have saved is astronomical- thanks to everyone here.

Buying a truck that is chipped is tricky. Do you know the person who owns it? Like any used truck, maintenance is key. Get a carfax as well. Does the truck have gauges to go with that chip? If it doesnt I'd walk away. 24k does seem a but high, but it also depends a lot on where you are at.

It is totally decked out with a leveling kit, brand new tranny w/warranty, guages, air bags, 2006 front end, newer tires but its the longevity of it i am worried about. Yeah i know the guy and he hasnt had any issues with it whatsoever but i dont want to have to put a new motor in it if diesel repairs cost me a million bucks

That price is a bit high if you ask me. Mine is a 99 and it had 130K on it when i bought it. It had a leveling kit on it, TS chip, gauges, 5" side pipe exhuast with a 4"DP, 36X14.50 tires on it and it was CCLB and i got it for 17,500.

May be hard to compare, but I got my 1999.5 for $17,500 DRW SD EXT LB 4X4 6-speed manual, Lariat with 107,000 miles, one owner and just about everything. Not chipped or other mods, but, runs great, has new brakes, front tires (need to replace rear tires this spring) and rear differentials. Bought it for pulling a 37.5 ft. 5th wheel trailer, so it also has towing package, gooseneck/bumper hitches (we added the 5th wheel hitch that we already had). That's my "Big Red" and just what I wanted. I feel like we paid a very fair price, but most like ours are listed up in the $20K-19K range. The DRW crew cabs are MUCH more available than the DRW ext. cabs, which in my mind should make the price on the CCs more competative than the DRW extended cabs, but I may be wrong on that. We did NOT want a Crew.

The asking price for your 2000 CC may be a little high from what I saw during my PSD search, but it depends on what all is in it. Run a NADA (www.nada.com) and Kelly Book (www.kbb.com) value search on it...see how it fits in those.

Oh...and I'd also recommend running a CarFax.com or AutoCheck.com VIN history check on it before buying. Those can be VERY revealing.

are the 7.3's reliable chipped and does chipping it reduce its longevity. i have been taught that you take a 300k motor life and cut it in half when you chip it

The price seems really high. I bought my 00' F250, 4x4 x-tra cab, short bed and it's all stock for $20K two years ago. What tranny did he put in? If it's still a stock tranny, then I wouldn't add much to the price. If it's been beefed up then maybe add $1K to the price of other comparable trucks. As far as longevity goes, I'd think you'd still get 300K - 400K easily out of the motor. Everyone seems to agree that the truck will fall apart long before the motor. I tell people before they buy a diesel (any brand) that they should need the power to justify the added expense of fuel, parts and maintenance. Fords are pretty good trucks, but they have their faults and you'll be glad to use this site.

I purchased a 2001 F350 (single rear wheel) short-bed, crew cab, 4x4 diesel in 2005 for just over $22,000 (drive-out). Mine is a Lariat and loaded and it only had 72,000 miles on it.

Personally...it sounds like the price of that 2000 PSD you're talking about is over-priced. If I sold my truck today (91,000 miles) I would ask around $22,000 and hope to get over $20K for it. Maybe I'm low-balling it because I think I got a great deal on it when I bought it...but I remember 2 years ago they were selling for $24-26K all day long, and I can't imagine paying that much for a 7 year old truck.

Also...if it's never had a problem then why was the transmission replaced?

What is the manufactured date? I think the price is little steep, I had only 36K miles when I bought my truck in May 2006!
