[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Jan-02 AT 04:45 PM (EST)]Interested in how to handle registration using the frame of a 78 Bird under my 50 f-1. I called the La. state troopers office and asked him what i needed to do. The trooper began yelling at me saying i needed to have clear titles registered in my name sent in to the state with a request to dismantle both vehicles.
He said A permit to dismantle must be issued on both vehicles before anything is taken off them. I then have to take my truck to the state troopers office so a new matching vin could be stamped on the frame and the body before i can start assembly. The new vin then had to be registered as a home made vehicle.
The trooper then said i know most people probably dont do this but their day is coming when i pull them over and their vehicle siezed on the spot.
Has anyone ever experienced this?
I want to do the right thing. Titles are not a problem but i wonder if it is worth the trouble to do all of this. In La. you are innocent until they make up something to charge you with.
Anyone can build a chevy.
ONLY THE BEST BUILD FORDS!
Wasnt it Cali that recently passed a law that reconstructed and reproduction cars can be titled as what they represent, not the YOM or any other hard to document criteria?
This covers everything from fiberods to what you are doing.
Forget the local bozo, call Sacremento or at least some local shop that is up on the latest.
Having spent a number of years in law enforcement I can assure you that just because one cop says that's the way it is doesn't mean that's the way it is. You need to talk this topic up and see how others IN YOUR STATE have resolved the situation. Also, check with your vehicle department. They write the regulations, the cops just enforce them.
as long as you already have your truck registered dont worry about it. just rivet the vin # from the truck frame to the car frame and forget about the cop. if you dont have it registered you might have some proublems.
Do you mean to tell me all those street rods and cruisers in California go through all this when they are building a car or truck. I bet they don't. Why would a frame change, change the identity of your truck? Like the other poster said, it would still look like an old Ford truck right? I also guarantee, if you did a good job on it, and that cop stopped you on the road, he wouldn't know the difference between a 78 frame and a 50 frame!
I lived in Cali for 20 years, and I'm moving back in a few months. Here's what I've encountered. The thing with the frame is verification that the frame came from a properly dismantled car, in other words, it's not from a stolen car that was stripped. I was looking at buying a '48 frame, and had to have the local cops come by and check the vin on the frame and run it through the computers and such to check that the frame was not stolen. The cops have no clue as to where the VIN is stamped on the frame. When I registered my '46 all they checked was the VIN on the rating plate in the glove box, they don't know where to look...so don't worry about the VIN on the frame, they'll never know where to look on the frame, and probably won't waste all their time looking for it. Just my 2 cents on swapping frames.
I had sorta the same thing happen to me. The CHP officer came by, found my vin from the engine, and the frame of my truck, checked to see if they were hot, and made me a new vin tag, riveted it on and we were all good. frame + engine = complete truck. No matter what they came from. I am in California though.
