heres the scoop i had my 7.3 replaced with a used 7.3 the engine is good however when it is cold the engine makes a hissing sound.when i warm up the truck after it has been sitting in the cold the hissing sound is very pronounced and when i drive that hissing sound is there when i accelerate with little power, but as soon as i let off the acelerater the sound stops.when i begin to here the sound upon acceleration if i step on it more it goes away.after about 15 min the sound stops and i have regular power on acceleration.oh and one more thing i dont here the turbo whistle but i do have power any ideas would be greatly appreciated thanks.i have a 2001 f350 superduty and the weather the past couple of weeks has been -30degrees celcius (cold).thank you for your time.
but when i drive i do not here the turbo whirring although i can feel it when i accelerate after it has warmed up and that hissing sound is gone.i looked for snakes under the hood but didnt see any i saw a pigeon 4 cats and a guy asking for spare change so i closed the hood so i think i am ok because i didnt see any snakes.but what about the turbo sound thanks.
The EBPV reroutes the exhaust gasses in order to warm up the engine. So until your truck warms up it feels like you just disconnected/lost your turbo. Feels like a dog doesn't it? What temp is it outside?
After she warms up, all is back to normal and the world is good again.
AMiller or one of the other guru's will chime in with the technical data... oopps - you beat me before I was finishing my edit Alan! Your fast....

With the EBPV Closed the turbo will make very little boost. Once the Engine oil Temp comes up to 131*F the PCM opens the EBPV and the Turbo can start producing boost again.

Well, theres you problem right there!! Every time I found some fellow wanting change under my hood I had a noticeble loss of power! That change is for my pulling power... get lost!! Find your own tow vehicle!!!
All jokes aside, the EBPV should work when it's cold and has low/no exhaust backpressure. Your old motor was probably working as it shoud, and the new one had a clogged ebp tube. It's a common cause for weird EBPV operation. Clean and reinstall, you should be good (hopefully)
