I am wondering what the difference between the 55 custom cab, and the regular cab is? I have an old 55 that I'm rebuilding, and nothing looks "custom" at this point.
Not a lot. I know a couple of things: a Custom Cab has a pencil-thin chrome strip that sort of runs horizontally right across the center of the dash and goes onto the doors on either side. Also the driver's door have a keyed lock, and the regular cabs have no key hole at all on the outside. Other than that, I'm not sure. Some years had different chrome emblems on the hood, some years the regular cab ones often just had the words "F-100" on there, and nothing else on the side of the hood, where the Custom Cab models had more elaborate chrome emblems.
The '55 Custom Cab has stainless trim on the upper grill bars, stainless drip rail ( rain gutter ) trim, driver's side door lock, and of course the Custom Cab emblems on each side below the side windows. Inside has cardboard door panels, arm rests, passenger side sun visor, and ( I think ) cigar lighter. The thin trim on the dash and doors I have only seen on one truck in my life so I'm not sure of it's connection with the Custom Cab option, although I'm sure it would have to be a Custom Cab in order to have it in the first place. Also, I'm not sure about possible paint options like two toning on Custom Cabs.
