Just wondering if anyone knows for certain what is the widest tire that can be put on a stock 66 shortbed. Original equipment was the equivalent of 215-75 R15. I know that 235-70 R15 fits, as that is what is on the truck now. It looks like the rear wheel is limiting factor, in that it has about an inch and a half more before it hits the rear frame rail.
Anyone know for sure whether a 265-60 would fit?
Thanks,
Andrew
P.S. Banjopicker, please give me a call again. I recieved your phone message, but when I went to replay it so that I could call you back, I realized you inadvertently didn't leave your number.
The main issue you are going to run into is wheel back spacing. What is the distance to the bed fender lip? I have ran 275/60-15's with no problems on my truck but its a 64. You can make a wheel back spacing gauge with a wire coat hanger or better yet a carpenters square. Use it to measure how wide of a wheel will mount before the tire contacts the springs/frame and fender lip. Take off your wheel and place the square flush on the flange. The little leg of the square will measure the distances for you. Then place a flat edge across the wheel and measure to the inner wheel mounting flange.
Just wanted to follow up with the board on this question. This past weekend, I mounted 265/60 R-16's BF Goodrich Radial T/A's on a set of 16 inch Cragar SS on my 66 custom cab.
They fit fine, but let's just say it's very close in the rears. Like maybe 1/4" of room between the tire and the frame rail.
