I have the SCTXcal2 on my '06, and was wondering why my rig doesn't smoke like other hopped up diesels do, I get a puff of smoke if I hit the floor at low RPM's. Does anyone know what makes the black smoke we all love to see? Too much fuel? Not enough fuel? Air? I know it seems like a dumb question, and I have heard that black smoke means lost power, but I'm still curious.
From what I know it seems to be older diesels or ones with the fuel turned up. I don't think it does good on the mpg's but it is cool to watch. My 06 doesn't smoke that I noticed and I hope that means everything is okay with the engine. I think some of the programers that increase fuel pressure and things like that make the coal/smoke.
The black smoke is basically raw fuel.I have sct program on a 04 that i got from bts and from take off until it gets wound up it rolls black smoke out on the highest setting.
Also... if your using the new ULSD fuel (15ppm) that is just now being sold... it smokes less as well.
My stock '03 on WOT does not lay down the black smoke screen it used to... and it is all do the new ULSD fuel we are all buying now. I would bet this is the reason 10:1 odds.

I thought about that too, but my buddies Ford/cummins smokes like a pig.
