Way back in high school auto, they use to teach us to keep your RPM around 2100-2500 when driving down the road. In my truck with the overdrive on I would be running at about 85 to 90 miles an hour, (5.4 Super cab 3.73 4wd)
Are modular motors designed to run at low rpms (under 2000) or should the over drive be turned off more often.
These Ford engines develop 90% of their torque in the low rpm range, that's why there is such a steep overdrive. So The old 2100 to 2500 rule is old school Now a 4 cylinder low dispklacement engine maybe closer to that rule. The 3v 5.4 is almost at peak torque at 1800.
As far as down shift from 4 to 2 or 3 to 2 makes no difference on the trans at all! It still has to go thru the same procedure just skips 3 when in 4th.
The only real resaon to keep it out of 4 the is if the trans is constantly down shifting.
just finished a 2000 mile trip towing 20 ft. enclosed trailer....halfway empty, returned loaded with car. Played with mileage alot. Locked out the O/D for reduced gear 'hunting', and actually improved mileage to avg. 13.6. Best was right at 1800. Brian

I was told its less wear and tear on your auto trans, when passing on the highway, shifting from 3-2 than a 4-2 downshift at w.o.t.
in all reality you have to put your foot into the pedal pretty good to get a 4 to 2nd gear downshift. I'd be more concerned about torque converter wear
