my 2003 f250 starts like a champ but when I let it warm up after about 3 minutes the engine idles up about 300 rpms and there is a hissing sound through the exhust....is this a problem or just something diesels do?
It's normal. It scared the heck out of me when I first heard it but then these guys schooled me that it is ok. It is the EBPV valve doing it's job by closing and helping the truck to warm up to NOT (normal operating temp) faster. It is even more pronounced with an aftermarket exhaust.
Same here, jmunkie. Not to worry. It's almost as disturbing, though, as the infamous cold air damper "clunk" shortly after the truck starts up. Some days, mine is rather quiet, and others days it sounds like a shock popping loose.
BTW... welcome to the forum! I've not been here long either, but have already learned a whole lot in a short time. These guys in here are really great about pitching in with experienced advice and suggestions.
If i am driving and just keep at a constant speed between 30 to 45mph it makes the same noise. soon as i let of the gas or accelerate it stops. This is when its below fifty out and i have a five inch and itake. Is this normal?
Only if the Engine oil temp is below 131*F redneckboy. After that the PCM does not command the EBPV. If you truck has fully warmed up and you still hear the EBPV Comming on then your EOT Sensor is bad or the EBPV Actuator is sticking.
i had the same same thing happen to me 2 days ago. it kinda got me worried, but when it warmed up a bit it went away. i thought that i blew off an IC boot, so i pulled over and checked it out. boots checked out fine and the hissing sound went away.
Thanks for the info and peace of mind that you gave me today amiller with the above info!

I thought that it would disable the EBPV once it detects you're underway regardless of the oil temp? There are more parameters isn't there? I thought this is why pressing the brake pedal disables it because you need to go. EBPV on really interferes with going. Do I need to dig in the manual or is their's a little sticky when it's time to deactivate?
After looking at all of the Warm up systems the break pedal only deactivates High idle system and is not part of the back pressure system. When at normal idle you can just barley hear a little hiss if you really listen for it. The pcm looks at TPS and EBPS to determine whether to open or close the EBPV to maintain backpressure to speed warmup while underway and once EOT is up to 131*F the PCM Commands the valve open and no longer controls it.
If it is cold enuff this weekend I am going to try to log some # in AE to show this.

I have to say, when I tap the brake pedal, the EBPV is off. There is nothing to hear. Of course I warm my truck, but when the F16 is on, and I tap the brake to shift into drive or whatever, it is off, and stays that way. Of course if it is still cold it will be loud as all get out. That is just the diesel sound of a cold engine.
last night after letting my truck warm up for a substantial amount of time i took off ans a few miles down the road I starting hearing a hissing noise like the one talked about above....the only reason I am researching more now is because it seems as if i have lost power since it happened....could be in my head though...any input....
This morning in the low 20's i high idled for about 10 minutes and was 7 miles down the road before the Engine oil Temp was up to 131*F. How does that compare with your warm up? If the EOT is above 131*F and you are still hearing it look to the EBPV accuator being stuck. If you are 30 miles down the road and the EOT is not up to 131*F it could be a bad EOT sender not telling the PCM to stop commanding the EBPV.
I have the same issue and posted today. Sounds like it is related to the EPBV sticking or something. Does your sound go away if you depress or let up on the accelerator?
had the same problem this morning at 19degrees.on high idle noise was very noticable but when i touched brake pedal it went away.came back when rev reached 1200 and stayed there for about ten minutes driving.had colder weather last year and never heard anything but since then i installed fordais and 4inch exhaust.any connection? 02 ex 65000 miles.
