Carb settings for the beginner question.

I have a Holley 750cfm, vac sec, on my 460.

I was just cleaning up under the hood and have never really resolved my running rich problem.

I started looking at my carb and going through my Holley tech book.

Only thing I have tinkered with is my choke so far while trying to learn.

It was set all the way to the lean side.

I backed it up a couple notches towards rich, but haven't a clue to what I'm doing here?

Another question, I have a 600cfm Holley, vac sec, would that carb be better suited to my 460? It's a stock motor.

Thanks.

It may give better throttle response than the 750. The 750 should be fine though, it either needs a couple of sizes smaller on the jets or the power valve is blown.

Thanks Lx.

It doesn't give me any driveability problems, would a blown valve have some issues with everyday running?

It just stays black in the venturis and the plugs look like the ones in the tech pages picture for running rich.

How can I tell what jets I have in it now? Gotta pull it off and take it apart?

Thanks.

Yeah, you have to pull the front bowl off to look at the number on the jets.
A blown power valve will make it run overly rich, but it may still run ok.
If it is a LIST#3310-2 or 3310-3 then I believe that 72 jets are stock.

Am I looking for a list # stamped into the jets in tiny print, or am I looking for the list # of the carb?

I believe it's a 4150 model. Does that help at all?

If I do indeed have 72's, what would you recommend me to step down too?

Thanks,
Blair

It is on the front right side of the choke horn. It will say LIST ????-?

The jet number will be stamped on the jets. Drop 2 number sizes if you change them. So if you have 72's, drop to 70's.

Thanks for the advise on some jets LX. I honestly don't think this truck would run without your help over the years.

How about my choke? It's been in the 30's here and I been thinking I should run the choke more to the rich side.

I never used to mess with this stuff, but I'm driving the truck a bunch now and really need to fine tune this carb and it's settings.

I'm going to look at Holley stuff for jets and powervalve stuff. Should I stay with the 6.5" power valve?

Thanks,
Blair

Yeah, that power valve should be fine with a stock camshaft.
If ti starts ok when cold, then I wouldn't adjust the choke. As it gets colder, it will close tighter. If it isn't starting good, then we can work on the adjustment.

It starts pretty good, but after say 10 seconds or so of idle, she starts to idle a bit rough. Nothing major, but it seems like the idle speed slows some.

Thanks,
Blair
