I notice some of you will lug your engines to get black smoke. It seems the only way i can get any smoke is just after the turbo starts to spool. If I lug it, thats all I get is a lug. On a sort of side note, this summer i noticed that if I shut the truck off when warm, then hop back in a couple of minutes later, i will get a pretty good amount of dark smoke leaving the parking lot. Think they are related?
Last question: If I let it overboost, and the ses light comes on, I don't notice any difference in power. Should I?
With your six speed, if you shift into OD at around 40mph and floor it, you should definitely see the smoke. You'll see much more with a tuner or chip than with your current mods.
I do find that if I drive mine real easily for a while (days at a time), that I'll get more smoke than I would otherwise the next time I get on it hard, as if it builds up, so to speak.
Can't comment on your overboost SES... I've had the boost regulator on mine the whole time.
