The easiest to use is one that goes in the lower radiator hose. Most auto parts stores have them.

Block Heater

I had a block heater from Ford in my 97 F150 with a 4.6 and my 03 F350 with a 5.4. Both worked great and really are not expensive.

Smile Heater

$400??? That is way to much, those heaters cost around $50 to $100 and a hour to install. I never have done a Ford always had it done but did do two Dodge trucks and it wasnt hard. Drain coolant, knock out the freeze plug in the block, not just any one the one they tell you remove because you could block coolant flow if it isnt the right one. Then put in the heater in the hole and tighten screw that draws it tight. Then run the wire to the grille. Refill coolant and your done. No way a $400 job.
