Converting to a manual?

hey I've got an extra 4x4 sitting around and I'd love to make it into a play truck, '86 1/2 ton extended cab 4x4, 302 with an overdrive I believe a c4? tranny is gone though, had water in it when I bought it and I tried to take it down the road and sure enough it's destroyed. The motor only has 100 miles on a rebuild and all the other components are too solid to overlook. How hard would it be to put a manual transmission in this truck? I am assuming this would be cheaper than a c6 since mine was like 900 and I don't want to put an old c6 in a truck that needs to spin 37's in the mud all day long. Am I wrong for assuming that a manual tranny will be better since it will be cheaper to maintain and rebuild?

First off, the overdrive tranny is called an AOD. It's ok, but it's not as strong as a C-6. If the truck is going to be a trail rig/rock rig, a manual tranny is great, but if it's going to be a mud truck, an auto is better because you won't lose much momentum when the tranny shifts compared to shifting a manual tranny. It won't be too hard to swap everything over. Just make sure you grab everything from the donor truck to make it easier for you. Get a new clutch kit, have the flywheel re-surfaced and get installin'!

P.S.

Any 4 speed from a 300 or 351W will fit behind your 302 as well.

I Agree With Big Hoss About The Automatic Tranny For The Mud But I Would Hafe To Disagree With Him About The Stick For Trail Riding And Rock Crawling The C6 Is The Best Way To Go All Around. If A C6 Cost You $900 To Rebuild Hate To Say It That Shop Bent You Over

The main thing about the manual I like when I'm 4 wheeling is the control you can get with it. I like being able to go slowly down questionable terrain in 4-low in 1st gear and just crawling down without having to touch the brakes and maybe locking them up.

When you can walk next to your rig while it goes down a hill if you wanted to, that's something that can't be done with any auto I've owned. I will concede however that going up some trails can be a little touchy when you have to negotiate a clutch pedal.

I would have to agree with big hoss 29, I like the standard for mountain trails. Nice to CRAWL down a mountain without using your brakes.

awesome thanks for all the replies guys, so how about a name for this manual tranny so I can look around, I'm assuming no 4-speeds will bolt up to this motor? I should be looking for a five speed from the 80-86 trucks or can I go up to the '96 model?

If you can find one, a New Process 435 is an awesome tranny. Another good choice would be a T-18. You can find either one in 80-86 F-150's and they will fit behind your engine and it will bolt up to your t-case. Just make sure the truck has a 300, 302 or 351W because if it has a 460, 351M or 400, the bellhousing pattern is going to be totally different.
Personally, I love the NP 435 because it has a really deep 1st gear and it's bullet proof. A junkyard is the best place to look for one but make sure you look inside the case and see what kind of shape it's in. A good measure is to rebuild it once you get it, but you might get lucky and not need to.

One more thing, Ford didn't put 5 speeds in their trucks until 87-88 depending on the truck. You do not want a 4 speed overdrive because they won't be nearly strong enough for you if you plan on beating the poo out of this truck.

I guess you've already figured out how you will get a clutch working. Are you going hydraulic?

I was just planning on removing all the parts from the donor truck and replicating everything. So I should look for a 4-speed out of the 80-86 trucks then? shouldnt be too hard.

I Would Go With A T18. She Will Creep And Be Strong In Granny. I Have A T18 Setting Around And I Know The Bell Housing Is Removeable. I Was Going To Put It On My 400
