Do the vent lines cause the same problem on bigger aftermarket tanks like the 55 gal. from Transfer Flow?
If so, can you "harpoon" them also?
It depends on if its necessary or not. The theory of why we have to do this to our trucks factory tank is that it's the same tank they use for the gas fed trucks. The tubes are sticking in the tank for some emissions reason that pertains to the gas engines and it's not necessary for the diesels. There's threads on it. I doubt the aftermarket tanks have the same issue.
One last thing, alot of guys have reported three hours to do this. It took me two hours taking my time and wasting time with the ring. I did use air tools though. Someone reported an hour or less with removing the bed. If you've been through one winter with salt on the ground, forget removing your $15 a piece bed bolts. I was going to cut them out to lift the bed and just replace them until I found out how much the eight cost...

My 06 has just started leaking from the top of the tank somewhere. My bro inlaws did this to and his at the dealer for this and other repairs. Hasn't got it back yet. They are the same age at purchase time, 1 year ago. Anyone know what might be leaking up there? Return line? So to stop it I might just do this mod while I have the tank out. Thanks.
The tank is in the same shape as it was prior to doing the mod. The mod takes place inside the tank so H2O has nothing more to do with this than if you didn't do the mod.
ok sweet thanks for the info, i am going to check in to this because i had to stand at the pump 20 minutes today in a suit with 5 degree weather not a fun thing.

What is this on the bottom of the tank between the rear strap and the tank?
Is this the white washer/oring for the top of the sending unit? Fell out during assembly? Could this be why my tank is leaking?

you guys gotta move to NJ, lol maybe the best thing about living here is, our gas is among the cheapest in the nation and we have people pump the fuel for us! i tend to get out a lot though and do it myself. I am not worried about how much time it takes, i'm not in that much of a hurry that the pump has to be on full blast. we have pumps here where you can set it to three different notches on the handle, I always use the slowest one, so it's not going to foam up and when it does click off, spill out diesel all over the side of my trucks. I've been doign this for a long time with my 97 too, just one click, go back inside the truck and wait, never foams up and never spills out. Also, like i've said in the past, i fill my truck up when it's at a 1/4 tank or sometimes a little more. just makes no sense to me to run it until it's that empty. what if you get caught in traffic or something and have to idle for a while, and you end up running out. never trust that computer and play it safe. i like having a full tank as much as possible in the winter because you never know if you going to be stuck or something happen where you need to idle for hours to keep you or your family warm.
I think those white rings on the fuel tank are handles for moving them around when empty in the warehouse or parts dept. The gasket is rubber & black that goes under the cap.

Yeah, but you just have to make sure the idiots actually take the green handle diesel pump handle out and use it. I've had issues at some places where I had seen them pulling out the unleaded nozzle even though I told them diesel 3 times and my truck is sitting there idling. This is the reason I won't get a diesel for my wife.
