I am getting a knocking coming from my front end when going over small bumps. I am having no control issues so I am wondering if this sounds like a ball joint problem or somthing else. It sound like a knock on a wooden door. Not very loud. I have 180000km on the truck.
I had a big thunk for a while with my '98 4x4 whenever I went over the hump into my driveway (turning while going over). When I got under there, I spent a while trying to figure out if it was the ball joints before I noticed that the sway bar drop links were literally gone. The sway bar was knocking into the control arm and other things on big bumps. Ordered up a new pair from Rock Auto and a few bolts later I was in business. The hard part was getting the remnants of the old ones off. Just something to check.
Ball joint / tie rod checks are usually detailed in a Haynes or Chilton manual if you have one. I think they just involve jacking up the corner and pulling the wheel from the top or bottom to feel for play / flat spots.
Check the sway bar links. Had the same symptoms and found the passenger side was broken on mine. It is simply a long bolt with a spacer between the sway bars. They are like $15 for the pair at NAPA.

I had the same problem. That is a good place to check.
