Windshield fluid froze. Is there some sort of additive to keep it going at lower temps? I heard you can add rubbing alcohol to the mix. How much to a gal of the stuff? TIA
Rubbing alcohol will work. Last year I did not get the cold weather fluid so I added about 1/4-1/2 a bottle to mine. Only thing is when you use it, it smells like rubbing alcohol.
Not to hijack the thread, but I got the cold stuff and am not sure about adding it. My resorvior is almost full. Can I mix it with the existing stuff? Same with the wife's van.
Scott, there shouldn't be any harm in mixing the stuff, if you don't feel like waiting until your current fluid in the resevoir is used up.
Aklim, you should look into the cold weather fluid, like the others mentioned. They actually don't even sell that stuff around here... some environmental b.s. reason, supposedly. I'm going to start picking up a bottle of it in Tahoe each year.
I'm guessing the reason you can't get it in Kalifornia (mis-spelling intentional ) is that it doesn't get THAT cold there unless you are in L. Tahoe or something.
the main difference between normal and winter washer fluid is the amount of methanol that is in it. As I recall summer or normal washer fluid is something like 10 or 20% winter stuff is mixed 50% methanol
I didnt even know they sold washer fluid that froze.
The de-icer stuff is pretty cool it helps on those mornings when you have just a few flakes of frost on your windshield, the type that doesn't deserve scraping.
Was about to dump some isopropyl alcohol in it when I noticed the frozen mess in the reservoir. Dumped the whole bottle of iso and it seemed to melt stuff. Found some -20 fluid and dumped it in. Lets see how it performs tomorrow.

That's what I always thought the reason was. I always figured they only sold the cold climate stuff in the colder climates.
Yeah that's what it seems, but if folks will buy it, why not sell it everywhere? I think that's where the chemical/environment part comes in. Maybe if it's not necessary around here, then they won't allow it. Who knows...
Accordin' to Andrew (aklim's) info, he's in Madison, WI. Brrrr, cold!!!
