The 4 speed OD that looks like a toploader is also commonly known as the SMOD (side mount overdrive). It's a very strong unit (on par with the toploader 4 speed of fame in 1-3) but it isn't geared well unless you have at least 3.5 gears to make up the 2-3 rpm drop.
ok dealership says its top shift over drive, but not any that were listed here in the posts, and that they were pretty uncommon, the side plate reads as follows rts bs jg 9

Is there a common problem with the SROD? I have an 82 F150 4x4 with the inline 6 and the SROD trans and mine will not shift into overdrive. Runs fine in all the other gears and I hear no noises from it. I had overdrive when I bought it and drove it home 40 miles with a nasty ujoint shimmy (surprised it made it home) On my way to the parts store the next day, I was driving along, heard a bang and no more overdrive (I was actually on my way to get the ujoint) By the way it still shimmied until I replaced the ujoint. The vehicle actually has only 75,000 actual miles. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
Look at the size of the OD gear in the pics he has here, and know what went "bang". I don't think these trannys are as strong as the old top loader 4 speeds.
