I have finished putting a volare suspension under my '54, but I have a few more question for the guru's on this site. My 351W is ready to drop in, and I know most guys offset the engine to clear the power steering unit, but I haven't seen anyone mentioning the radiator issue. Doesn't offsetting it move the fan outside of the shroud? or does everyone usually use electric fans? I also noticed that sanderson sell Volare-SB Ford headers, does this mean that the engine can be centered, these are quite pricey, but may be worth it. BTW, the no-limit video was invaluable, as was the FTE article written by John Niolon (much thanks)
I put my smallblock one inch to the passenger side as recommended by many to avoid exhaust to steering box clearance problems. I am running Mustang GT shorty headers and the exhaust clears the box by a mile. I am running a 70s Ford truck radiator which can be offset a bit so I don't expect any trouble there. I could have centered my engine mounts without any problems. If I made a mistake, I crowded my firewall for no good reason. Was concerned about having enough room for the fan but it was not an issue. I can email a PIC of my engine compartment or post to my homepage if your interested.
I just put an electric fan in truck when I put in the volare and offset the motor. You may have to make your own shroud or even better just mount the stock shroud offcenter, if no one produces one that is offset. Beware with those headers though, I bought them and they didn't even come close to clearing my volare steering box (luckily Iwas able to return them). I would suggest the shorty headers.
I can't help too much on the rad but if you use the stock hipo exhaust manifolds you will have clearence. You know the ones that look like iron headers. You'll find them on Mach1s and Torino GTs.
