Some white smoke when the engine is cold is normal. However if your engine is warm and it's still blowing out white smoke, then you have a problem. Could be an injector problem, or you may have a blown head gasket. Look for oil in the coolant.
Kinda like going to the doctor with a complaint that vanishes as soon as you take a seat in the waiting room...
I nailed the throttle a few times on the way to work this AM. NO SMOKE!
I topped off the tank last evening and dumped in a full bottle of grey Diesel Kleen. The Turbo kicked in and a massive cloud (visible in the trailing cars headlamps) was left in my wake.
The grey bottle is s'posed to treat 50 gallons to a 6 cetane boost. I have normally added a white bottle (treats 35 gal's) every few tank fulls.
What could the gray bottle have done that the white did not?
Maybe I'll see it again in the dark on the way home...?
The grey PowerService is designed for normal use, and the white bottle is designed for cold-weather use, it has an anti-gel. I just put two 96 oz bottles in each of our 550 gallon on road and off road diesel tanks, they are outside. I also use it in my truck, that and a funnel is in the toolbox.
I let the mph drop to about 50 last night and waited for some traffic to approach before booting the throttle to max. Smoke was visible in their lights. However, it does seem to have lessened since switching to the grey bottle.
The massive cloud was within 20 miles of adding a (6 cetane @ 50 gal) dose to a 35 gal tank. No smoke on the way in to work in daylight, smoke last night. I'm going to look for it again in the daylight today. Maybe its light enough now that I only see it in headlamps.
The Smoking began after I let the truck pretty much sit this last year with no DK in the tank. Began using it as a daily driver in the fall. Adding the white bottle every few tanks reduced the smoke events to turbo kick in and the PS liked it. Quieter and more energy than with the stale old fuel.
They only had the grey where I topped off on Monday evening. It seems to run even better with the higher cetane.
My 02 e 350 has 63K on it as a frame of reference.
A big thanks for you guys trying to help me chase this down.
John
you've mentioned that your seeing the smoke when it's dark. Are you sure its not black? My truck smokes black, which is fine, but when its dark and I look in the mirror and see smoke, it appears to be lighter in color- gray or white. The headlights of other cars behind you make the smoke seem lighter.
I havent smoked in three days...well, maybe a few cigars. Nothing from the PS though. I have tried everything I can think of to make it blow smoke. Nada!
Guess I'm either out of Rotella or the 8 cetane dose of grey bottle DK cleaned off the injectors thouroughly.
AS I mentioned, I had let the truck sit for many months. Is it possible that the fuel got a bio infection or water contamination? COuld it have raken 10 tanks of fuel and deisel clean to clear it out?
