Football rules question

During Sundays Pats / Lions game a situation came up where the Pats were running a no-huddle offense moving down the field and the Lions had used all their timeouts. When the Pats got near the goal line the Lions called a timeout even though they had none. The zebras stopped the clock and stood around talking it over for about a minute during which time the Lions made substitutions and got a defense set up. Then they just started the clock again and went on like nothing happened. Does anyone know how this should have been handled? If that was correct then in reality teams have unlimited timeouts.

Was there an injury timeout? Sometimes players get "injured" on a play and go down, forcing the trainers to come out onto the field. A time out is called and that player is forced off the field for the following play. During that time I am sure other subsitutions can occur.

I didn't see that game, this is just a suggestion of what it may have been.

Sounds to me like the lions successfully hearded the zebras right where they wanted them.

that was a freak show call. should have been a penalty, but the ref said, "there was no time out as they had no time outs left". i'm at a loss to explain it. good question..

I'm really shocked the NFL has no provisions for this.

Even more shocking is that it's taken 35 years of watching pro football for me to finally hear of a coach trying it. If they have no penalty for it in the rule books, the move is brilliant and the competition commitee will fix it this off season. Take it to the bank.

Chris Webber will always occupy a warm spot in my heart for his indiscretion...

Ther was no injury or anything like that. I was expecting to see at least an illegal procedure call or maybe even an unsportsmanlike conduct, but they were obviously clueless as to how to handle it so they just started the clock and continued.
