Cold Start Issues

As the weather gets colder my '04 6.0 PSD is becoming difficult to start, the colder the harder it becomes. Ive never had this problem until this winter. The dealership has cleaned the turbo vanes, and replaced one injector, but nothing is fixing this problem. Ive only got 54k on the truck. Any ideas b4 i lose my mind?

Cranking speed is very important, how are your batteries and are you using the correct viscosity oil for the ambient temperature?

It may just be your diesel. We got our first big cold spell here in oklahoma with our blizzard and temps in the single digits. Before the storm came in my wife filled up her 1999 F-250 7.3 at our local gas station and half a bottle of Diesel Kleen white bottle. Later that evening the cold front came in and I stopped by to fill up my truck2004 F350 6.0. The pumps were frozen neither would pump. It took almost a minute to pump .31 cents worth of diesel on one pump and the other pump would not pump at all. I had to go to another station to get diesel that was winterized. That same evening my wifes truck would start and then shut down it would not run. She never has had this problem before and she has over 200,000 miles on the truck. She eventually got it to start and was able get home. The next day I went to start her vehicle and the same problem. I poured the rest of the diesel kleen in her truck and this helped the next day. I never had a problem with my truck though and I know it was because of the winterized diesel.

load test your batteries. if the voltage drops below 9,5 it is killing the processor so it will not fire even if everything else is ok.

I just got back from a trip up north with my '03 6.0 PSD with brand new batteries. Still had very hard starting when below 40 degrees, one time three cranks with a total of 30 seconds (and a resulting large plume of fuel) before it started. Dealer installed just released firmware for the computer that runs the injectors for a few seconds after engine shutdown. Cleans them out and prevents fuel or oil plugs when cold. Or at least that is how the tech explained it to me. Has made a big difference in starting so far.

Mine sat over night in -10 without being plugged in, started fine, but sounded rough for a couple seconds, I would check batteries, they dont start well if there not fully charged.

I had a couple of other things done at the same time but as I recall the computer change for the injectors was done under the 100K warranty. Hope the battery check does the trick for you.

I have a load tester...both batteries were about 11.5 volts. Ive read some posts about the glow plug relays going bad or maybe faulty glow plugs.....these are about the only things not checked by the dealer...any thoughts?

I too am having trouble with my 03 Ford Super Duty 6.0 Ltr. I have had it in the Ford Dealer ship 7 times last fall and 3 times this fall. They have done injector work, programing work and now they tell me to change my oil, I did that, and it still does not start well when it is cold out. I am getting very frusterated. This truck used to start great any time.. I have had it start at -20 with out being plugged in when ice fishing on LOW. Besides all the trips back and forth to the Dealer, they charge $100. service charge for Warranty work also...

the truck starts hard, and when it does start, it runs very rough and stinks like fueil real bad in the cab. IF the truck does not run for at least 20 minuets, you will not have throttle response and no turbo until it warms up real good.

Any help out here.
