Exhaust Brake Question

I've got a an early '99 truck. When I bought it a year ago, it had an exhaust brake on it. It's the type that uses the EBPV, but it appears to be bought as a kit, not home made like the cheap one that I have heard of on this site. It's got a little blue label around the switch that says "Powerstroke Powerbraker". Does anyone know who made or sold these brakes, because I haven't been able to find one. Also, I was thinking of wiring up my own home made brake on a different truck. Do the commercially bought electronic brakes provide any more braking power than the home made ones?

No, the homemade ones do the same thing. The only way to make it better is to add and actual valve into the system such as Banks or BD etc. Search ebay for 'powerstroke brake' and you'll find several similar to what you've got, some are better then others.

So the one in the first link comes on only with the brake pressed, and the second one comes on when you release the accelerator pedal right?

Mine is still wired to the dash with a slight revision to my original design. I find that the exhaust brake works best if left on all the time when descending a mountain pass. Then when the service brakes are needed for a little help I just have to barely touch the pedal to bring the speed back down to where I need it.
That way I don't have to ride the brake pedal all the way down the hill.

for a quick switch on the dash w/o incorperating the throttle signal I've done this:




Used a lighted switch so it lights up when it's on to remind me. No SES light, no code, no problems. Just have to remember to turn it off when you want to go again.

That's a nice simple setup Kbeefy. Is R1 about 10 ohms?

Kbeefy, I wired mine up as you diagramed and for the switch I used a two speed axle "push-pull" switch mounted to my gearshift lever just below the ****.

If you do leave it engaged, it will remind you immediately. When you call for throttle, it just falls on its nose.

You bet it will... but if it falls on it's face 30 miles into your 700mile trip w/ your 12k goose on the back the day after you install your BTS Valve Body it might give you pause. (but followed by intense relief when you realize you left the darn brake on and your tranny is fine) I haven't hooked up the Accelerator yet but I've got the parts and fully intend to.

Kwik, I think it is 10ohms, I'm pretty sure I got the value off of your brake thread. I can look through my notes if you really want to know...
