Heater Core Leaking

Just noticed antifreeze dripping on the floor. Had a smell for a few days and now water dripping.

How hard is it to remove the heater core? Any tips from those who did it before. Is it worth repairing (short down time) or should I just buy a new one (and wait on getting one shipped). I plan on adding classic air down the road (maybe spring).

Thanks,

Mike

the heater on these old trucks is very easy to work on most parts stores should be able to have you one in a day or so and the one i just looked up at oreilys is 17 bucks.

ditto what Fritolay said. Just put new one in 71F350. My biggest trble was reconnecting the rubber bellows looking part that connects the fresh air vent to the heater box. I think I should've tried connecting it before I had the heater bolted back up to the firewall. Good time to get debris out of heater too.

Mike They are available at any of your favorite parts houses, and I think all the way to 79 are the same. You should be able to find them stocked.

Thanks to all. It was dark this morning when I saw the water dripping. It sounds like it should be a fairly easy fix.

I looked on the web and autozone has one from $17.00. Takes about a day or two for delivery.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike, Online is not the store. You should be able to go to the store, pick one up and fix it today.

If you want to that is.

Thanks, Autozone has one and I'm going to pick it up at lunch time..

I looked last night and am not sure where to start. Do I remove the blower motor and start from there? Do I have to remove the housing on the kick panel first?

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

Disconnect and drain the heater hoses, then remove the 3 bolts on the firewall that hold the heater box in place..... Unless your truck has factory A/C, then the process is a bit more involved. Might try the public library for a Chilton's manual that shows the R&R procedure for the heater core....

Thanks to all for the help and thanks Dave, you were right- 3 bolts held the whole assembly.

For those who might have to do it in the future, unbolt the fresh air duct from the kickpanel. It makes it easier.
Disconnected 2 defrost ducts and its out. The heater core is under a panel that is held in with about 8 5/16's screws.

Once again, Thanks all

Mike

my '72 4 wheeler had a leaker some time back, two choices, one for air and one for no air. The only difference I could see between the two was that the heater hose nipples were different length. I used the one with the longer ones. (More to slide hose on). Nobody around here will fix one, just buy the new core. Cheaper.

It'd be kind of tough to fix a heater core that's rotted through.
