If you're talking about replacing the axle shaft itself, are you talking about the inner or the outer section? They are joined by a slip shaft in the TTB arm about a foot outside the differential.

You'll have to take off the rotor and spindle to get the axle shaft out. You'll have to remove the metal clip holding the boot over the slip joint too.

It's actually pretty easy. The hardest part is getting the spindle off. I would suggest renting a slide hammer and a spindle puller, that's the easiest way to get it off.

That is the easiest way to get the spindle off, but another way I've found that works ok is with a metal chisel and decide size hammer.

If you look on the backside of the knuckle you may find a hole that you can put a punch through and hit the spindle. I did, and got one side started by hitting the spindle from the backside. The other side of my truck didn't have the hole so I had to go without.

I basically use the chisel around the parameter and try to separate the spindle from the knuckle. It takes a couple minutes of wacking w/o progress before you finally see it separate and once it starts to separate you're home free.

You'll also need a spindle nut socket to remove the spindle nut.

I've done it 3-4 times and it's not that bad.
