hey guys, i have an interesting one. the power door locks on my 2000 f150 seem to be funny. when i try locking or unlocking the doors by using the switch inside the door they can't. the solinoids are trying but it just won't throw the locks (like they arn't powerful enouff). everything seems to be clicking and or trying to work. now heres the funny part...when i put the truck in gear the door locks go down automatically like they should first try and with no problem. so i'm thinking that it might not be the solinoids after all. is there a way that i could try to jump the solinoids right from the battery? or is there anything eles that i should be checking out? thanks guys.
The same thing is happining to my 01. I read on this site somewere that it is most likely the accuateors(spelling?) I am sure someone else with a better understanding will chime in.
I just ordered the actuators from a friend from FORD, I got them for $49 a piece. You can get them from http://www.genuine-ford-parts.com/ for $46 plus shipping. The local Ford Parts wanted $86 a piece.
The part numbers are 6L3Z25218A42AA for passenger side and 6L3Z25218A43AA for drivers side.
I'll let you know how it works when I get them replaced.
My 2000 F-150 that I had did the same problem except I didn't have the automatic feature turned on so I wouldn't know what happens there. I bought new power lock actuators and I installed them in myself which took some time but much cheaper (had to take door panels off). It worked like brand new after that. I was told that this is a common problem. If it is your actuators, don't buy them at a dealership. That was my problem because they costed me $75 a piece. Go on ebay or something where they are cheaper.
right on, thanks guys. do you need the hands of a 12 year old asian kid to get in there, or are they pretty easy to change out once the door panels are out? thanks for all the replies, and matty please let us know how it works out, and any problems/headaches that a first timer might run into. thanks
A couple notes - the window rail that is the closest to the latch, un-bolt it. It will slide a little away from the latch and it will be a lot easier to get in there and work.
You'll need a torqx (sp?) screwdriver to undo the bolts holding the latch in.
The door molding is in 3 pieces, the main piece, the a-piller, and the b-pillar. Remove the B-piller piece from the door, there is a screw underneath it. Remove the plastic behind the door handle, there is a screw behind it. And gently lift up on the switch panel and disconnect the switches. The main door panel lifts up and out, it's kinda tricky.
That's all I remember at the moment, I get the new actuators tonight and will work on it tomorrow. I'll try to take some pics too.
Once I got the driver's side done, I had the passenger side done in 30 minutes. It does help to have small hands. I have about a dozen little scrapes on my hands.
And the locks now work. I had the same issue as you, the remote and the door buttons would not lock/un-lock the door, but after putting it in gear and driving, the doors would lock.
Now the doors lock/un-lock with the remote and the buttons. Took about 4 hrs of labor and $110 in parts.
The stock actuator that I removed were in a J shap, the units I got from Ford were like the ones on eBay (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=160056079605), just straight pieces. So you may have success with those.
