It would be easier to buy a factory 4x4!
Ford made alot of these, keep looking around.
It would save you money in the long run, unless you know someone with a salvage yard.
If you want to convert a 2wd to 4wd, buy an uncommon model to convert,
like a 50s or 60s vintage. Ford made way too many 80s 4xs for you not to find one. Just my opinion.

Yes, it can be done, but it's a lot of work and unless you are really attached to the truck, it would be cheaper to buy a 4x4.

Disagree. It's easy. It's all bolt-up. You can do this. Hunt for a 4x4 parts truck so you can have everything you need. But it's basically the front axles, the trans/transfer case (including rear crossmember), and the driveshafts. If you can get one with the same trans as you have this will simplify things. Use blocks or add-a-leaf on your rear axle to raise it up even with the front (or a bit higher if you want the factory nose-down look, which I prefer). This is not a big deal at all IMO. Going from auto to manual trans or vice versa is way more trouble IMO and I don't see anybody telling those folks to buy a different truck. Go for it!

I agree with jas88, I am currently looking to do the same thing in early spring, I have already located several possible donor trucks. I get more enjoyment in making soemthing I want instead of buying it. I will probably end up swapping both front and rear axles to ensure proper gearing.
