no tail lights

Hello,

This should be an easy fix for you guys. I have no tail lights. I have brake lights and rear signal lights, but no rear lights with the headlights on. About this same time my dash lights went out. I have checked the fuses all ok, as are the bulbs. What is up???????

Thanks Dave

I too am having the same problem. I replaced the headlight switch with no luck. The dome light and warning chime were staying on and when I pushed the door pin switch in the lights and chime were dimmed and quieter.

For some reason the light and chime started to work properly, but the tail lights and dash still did not come on with the switch. I then found that the relay would switch and tha dash and marker light would come on but the DTR lights woul still be on.

after a few hours I found a sweet spot in the headlight switch that would turn on marker and dash lights, then moving the pull switch a little I could get the head lamps to turn on. All this came up over night. All worked well the day before, and the next morning I declared WAR. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks

Have you guys had any luck trouble shooting your lighting problem. I have a '94 F350 cc dually that does the same thing. I started a thread a few days ago but have not received any replies. I put in a new connector on the wiring harness for the headlight switch, new switch, and installed relays and fuses to redirect power to headlights. None of this solved the problem. I'm going back to the old switch since it also had a sweet spot in it where everything works.

But now the problems getting worst, signal lights are going out or some times staying solid when used, also when I brake dash lights go out. I've been told its a bad ground but I can't fine it.

you might want to double check your fuses. I took my truck in to the shop and they told me it was a fuse. They also checked the lighting circuit and found minor problems that did not contribute to the headlights. I thought I was quite thorough but i missed it. One of the fuses for the marker lamp relay was gone it just left the fuse in tact and burned a small part out near the mount inside the fuse. So double check your fuses. good luck

i have had fuses that looked perfect and until i used an 8x magnifier i could see no imperfections.

magnified stood right out.

when in doubt change fuse than bulbs.

First warm day I'm going to check bulbs and fuses. Has anyone tried removing and cleaning their multi-function switch? I understand it's fairly staight forward and takes roughly 30 minutes. I think I'll give it a shot too- can't hurt at this point.

I relaced my switch as I saw melting of the plastic in the connector. It was probally a good idea since the switch was 17 years old. That did not help the situation. I saw burning/melting of the connector that plugs into the switch. I enquired about that at ford. The guy there smiled and walked back to the parts shelves then came back with a new connector complete with pigtail and butt splice connectors. It was under $20. He told me that it was a common problem. The plastic gets distorted and melted with heat which can result in a poor connection which generate the heat and cause it to melt more. Some might have seen melted fuses on the panel for your heater fan, but you fan still works. Same with the switch for the headlights. There is a fair amount of current running through there and the same thing is happening to the switch and could cause fuses to go as you turn on the lights.

I had the same situation with the sweet spot. What I found was the switch was connecting throughtwo circiuts and pulling power through the headlight circiut then pushing back to the marking lamps gets all running. Is your relay working? check your fuseable links. If you are getting power to the relay check the connector to the main switch with a test light. how does the connector look? If it looks questionable I would replace it... better safe than sorry. Also my problem was a simple fuse that didn't look like it had blown, I will not make that mistake again. The first thing i will do is very closely look at the fuses. I hope this helps cause I think this is all I have to offer with my experience with this situation. Good Luck

Same here. 4 different switches...nothing new (the new ones were even worse - no sweet spot)

Four years have gone by since I found the "sweet spot"....now the headlights go crazy whenever they feel like it....like the other morning when a Sheriff got about 5 cars ahead of me on the freeway BLAM no lights, then flickering. Had to duck behind a semi quick so he wouldn't see me.

I guess I am gonna go replace fuses, looking good or not. Hope that fixes it...

If you have any lights at all you have power to the switch. the parking lamps and headlamps are on different circuits. It was expained to me that the "sweet spot" is just jumping from one circuit with power to the one that does not. If your switch has signs of melting and the fuses are good, you might want to use a test light to see if you are getting power to the back of the switch. if memory serves me, the large guage yellow is the power to the lights. look at all the wires for signs of damage or melting, or use the test light to see if you have power further back.
