I have a 2.3 liter and it has a problem with surging. I had it scanned and the codes said it was the egr valve and mass air sensor. I replaced the egr valve and that did not fix the problem. The air sensoris an expensive part and before I spent money on it I was wondering if anybody else out their has had this problem before. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
You can clean the MAF sensor. I believe there are instructions in the tech. sticky at the top of the Ranger forum. Make sure to do it when the truck is cold, and disconnect the battery to reset the computer.
What do you define as surging? The idle just fluctuating? Does it do it all the time?
If it's just a fluctuating idle, look on the side of the throttle body for a small metallic cylinder. This is the "Idle Air Control" valve, or IAC. Unplug it while the idle is fluctuating, if it stops and the idle stabilizes (it may stabilize very low and die if the engine is cold), remove the metallic cylinder and clean it with throttle body cleaner or replace it.
Cleaning the MAF is easy, though it's held on with security Torx bolts. Once you get it off, it's just a matter of cleaning it with throttle body cleaner or electrical cleaner VERY carefully, then replacing it.
